Religious buildings in Sassello
Sassello's historic center is home to interesting sacred buildings.
The Parrocchia della Santissima Trinità, consecrated in 1725, has a single Baroque-style nave that includes a chestnut-wood choir, the work of local artists, a chancel and six chapels; it holds frescoes and paintings by Bruschetto.
TheChiesa di San Giovanni Battista (XI sec.) holds paintings from the 16th and 17th centuries, Baroque cabinets, sculptures and a statue by Anton Maria Maragliano.
The Basilica dell'Immacolata Concezione, built in 1582, has a majestic interior in the simple bareness of its late Renaissance style, revealing in the harmony of the three naves a unity of architectural inspiration not found in the other two large churches in Sassello; an ancient statue of the dead Christ, the object of special devotion on Good Friday, is kept in the center of the church.
Chiesetta di Sant'Antonio Abate, at the ancient core of Bastia Sottana, formerly included within the walls of the castle built during the 15th century by the Doria family. Although greatly transformed and reduced, the old marquis church holds a painting of the Madonna and saints by painter John Baptist Carlone inside.
Medieval bridge, located a short distance from the church of San Rocco.
The 1637 Chiesa di San Sebastiano, an old border guardhouse, and the picturesque group of houses in Pozzetto.
Visitor Center of Gervino Palace
May and June: Saturday and Sunday: 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.; Monday, May 1: 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The new Gervino Palace Visitor Center set in the beautiful setting of Gervino Palace in Sassello's historic core is entirely dedicated to the theme of geology and geomorphology. Through modern multimedia displays, the Visitor Center provides information on both the characteristics of the Beigua Geopark and the international networks of Geoparks (the European Geopark Network and the UNESCO-supported Global Geopark Network). The Visitor Center-thanks to the collaboration with the Savona City Council Department of Culture-offers the opportunity to observe an exhibit of rare fossil specimens of Anthracotherium, a suiform Artiodactyl mammal, widespread in Europe, Asia and probably Africa, which lived between the Eocene and Oligocene (50-23 million years ago). It was a large animal (about 2 m. long and 1.5 m. high at the shoulder) that lived in subtropical climate zones in swamp, lagoon or estuarine habitats. At the Visitor's Center, which also functions as a Tourist Information and Reception Office, you can purchase Beigua Park promotional materials and gadgets.
